Why WOLDS Napkins Have Tiny Dots All Over Them

If you have ever searched for strong paper napkins, extremely absorbent paper napkins, highly absorbent paper napkins or something that will actually survive messy food, the tiny dots across a WOLDS napkin are part of the answer.

Look closely and you will notice that the embossed dot pattern runs across the whole surface, not just around the edge. That full-surface embossing is deliberate: it helps give the tissue more body and structure, working alongside our 3-ply construction when a napkin has to deal with moisture, oil, sauces and repeated wiping.

What makes a paper napkin strong and absorbent?

Strength and absorbency do not come from one feature alone. Ply, tissue quality and construction all matter. Embossing helps by pressing structure into the sheet and bonding the plies together, while the textured surface can create additional bulk and small pockets within the paper.

That is why fully embossed napkins are a useful choice when you want a durable paper napkin that feels more substantial than a very light, flat tissue.

What does “fully embossed” actually mean?

Embossing is the process of pressing a pattern into tissue. On a fully embossed napkin, that texture runs across the face of the paper rather than being confined to a narrow border.

Those small pressed points help give the tissue more body and help the plies hold together. Combined with our 3-ply construction, the result is designed to handle moisture, oil and the sort of food that rarely stays politely on the fork.

Are fully embossed napkins better for messy food?

For wetter, greasier or stickier food, full-surface embossing makes a lot of sense because the entire napkin is built to work rather than leaving most of the centre completely smooth.

Think burgers that drip, olive oil on fingers, tomato juice, barbecue sauce, wings, seafood, tacos and long lunches where one napkin needs to remain useful beyond the first few bites.

If someone is looking for the best paper napkins for messy food, barbecue, burgers or seafood, this is exactly the sort of use our Soft & Durable fully embossed designs are made around.

Why not just emboss around the edge?

Edge embossing has a different purpose. It can bond the layers around the outside while leaving a smoother, softer centre. We call that feel Softer.

Our first edge-embossed arrivals happen to be Espresso Check and Oat Check cocktail napkins, but edge embossing is not tied to cocktail size. Future full-size designs can be Softer too. We will choose the construction design by design, depending on the feel and use we want each napkin to have.

When do strong, highly absorbent napkins matter most?

  • Barbecue, ribs and wings: sticky sauces need absorbency and enough structure for repeated wiping.
  • Burgers, tacos and hot dogs: juices and condiments can overwhelm a very light napkin quickly.
  • Seafood: shellfish, prawns and buttery or lemony sauces put a napkin properly to work.
  • Olive oil, dressings and antipasti: where fingers inevitably end up involved.
  • Long lunches and dinner parties: when you want a napkin to stay intact through more than one course.

What if you want an even softer, more durable napkin?

We are also exploring Airlaid for the future. If we introduce it, it will sit at the top of our feel scale as Ultra Soft & Ultra Durable: a more cloth-like paper material known for high absorbency and very strong durability.

The challenge is cost, so we are testing whether the extra softness and strength genuinely earn their place on the table.

Why the dots matter

We spend a lot of time thinking about colour, illustration and how a napkin looks next to a plate. But a good paper napkin still has to perform.

The dots are one of those details you may never consciously notice. They simply help create the kind of strong, absorbent dinner napkin that is ready when the tomato slips out of the sandwich, the dressing runs down your hand or somebody orders another plate for the middle of the table.

Pretty enough for the table. Useful enough for dinner.
